Professional Mentoring at Birmingham City University
Our mentoring programmes are designed to help students achieve their full potential through trusting mentoring relationships with professionals working within Birmingham where they can take chances, explore their needs and enhance their professional experience.
All we ask from our mentors is that they can meet their student once a month, for around an hour. This can take place at the mentor's place of work, at university, or somewhere neutral, like a local café. We also have various events throughout the year, starting with the scheme launch due to be held mid-November, and an awards event at the end of the scheme for mentors and mentees to really get involved!
At the end of the academic year, we then celebrate the year’s successes with an awards ceremony, where we wind down the year and rewards the progress that’s achieved by the dedication of all of our mentors and mentees.

“I got involved as a Mentor to help in the development of a young person’s professional life, to impart the knowledge I had gained from leaving University into professional life and finally to give something back to the local community. As a mentor, the programme also provided me with a refresher on the skills needed to successfully navigate the job market as all too often it is easy to forget the basics of CV skills, interviewing etc..
Programmes like this are invaluable to give undergraduates an insight into what employers look for and give themselves the best chance at landing that graduate role.”
Prithpal Saimbi, Private Client Paraplanner, Charles Stanley and previous 'Mentor of the Year' winner.
